With over three thousand mineral and thermal springs, the Czech Republic can be considered a real geothermal paradise. Moreover, curative springs were known to exist between the 11th and 14th centuries on the same sites as the present famous Spas of Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně. Czech Spas are places of interest for foreign visitors due to their old-world charm and architecture. Foreign visitors come to relax and learn about these local curative springs.

Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad)

Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) the largest Czech Spa is located in a picturesque valley of the Teplá River by its confluence with the Ohře River. The town is surrounded by forest hills. According to a popular legend, the hot springs were discovered by the Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV while hunting.

Carlsbad was built on terraced ground and gives the town a particularly attractive appearance. The elegant scenery of Carlsbad is composed of beautiful parks and avenues and of Spa woods spread on nearby hillsides. The Spa centre is formed by numerous sanatoria, guest houses, Hotels and colonnades with a dozen natural springs giving medicinal effects.

Carlsbad Spa treatment is based on drinking hot mineral spring water. The spring of "Vřídlo" (Sprudel) has the warmest mineral water (72°C). The Carlsbad thermal water is used also for baths and for irrigation. Natural curative sources are used in combination with the latest medical methods. Amongst Carlsbad‘s other attractions is its unofficial "Thirteenth Spring" - from which the original herbal liqueur Becherovka is made as well as the International Film Festival which is held there annually at the beginning of July. There are many sporting opportunities in Carlsbad such as tennis, golf, horse riding etc.

Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad)

The world famous Spa and health resort Marienbad, part of what is known as the West Bohemian Spa Triangle (Carlsbad, Franzensbad, Marienbad) is situated in a valley, surrounded by woods and protected from western and northern winds by mountain ranges.

The natural environment, pure air and the position of this Spa make it one of Czech Republic's foremost Spas. Marienbad is rich in mineral springs and about forty of them are used for therapeutic purposes. The fame of Marienbad treatment is based above all, on a drinking cure using healing spring water rich in free carbon dioxide and mineral salt. The best known is Cross Spring, Rudolph Spring, Carolina Spring and Ferdinand Spring. About 50 km of paths cross its English parks, inviting for relaxing walks. The impressive architecture of the 19th century is typical for most of the buildings. A number of refurbishment projects have been launched in the past few years to restore them to their original splendour. Marienbad offers many sporting possibilities (large stadium, several swimming pools, fitness centres, tennis courts and an 18-hole golf course - one of the best in Europe).

This charming little town has been a spa town since its foundation in 1793. Since then, it has been able to keep its particular character supported by the 19th century architecture. Together with large and gorgeous parks and mineral springs the city has maintained a harmonious and traditional identity. Františkovy Lázně(The Spa of Francis) has 22 different mineral springs.

Poděbrady

Poděbrady (50 km from Prague) is a spa town on the river Elbe surrounded by meadows and natural parks. Třeboň
